EVENTS & WORKSHOPS Workshops are a wonderful opportunity to deepen your yoga practice. They are not necessarily more challenging than regular classes. Rather more time is taken — with detailed instruction — to focus on a particular aspect of the practice.

Interested in yoga, but unsure where to start? In this two-hour workshop, we will explore some of the basic postures and breathing techniques that make up the practice of Hatha yoga. Students will leave with a basic understanding of proper alignment and technique, and will be prepared for most beginner and all level classes. There will be time for discussion and experiencing a few different styles of Hatha yoga. No yoga experience necessary, simply bring a willingness to move and play.

with Sean Michael Hall
Our hip joint is surrounded by a complex maze of different muscle groups that connect the legs to the torso. When there is imbalance between these groups, misalignment of the spine develops and free flow of energy through the central channel (sushumna nadi) is blocked. Join Sean in a practice that opens the 6 muscle groups of the hip. We'll work slowly and systematically towards, and eventually into, hanumanasana (splits) and padmasana (lotus pose), before directing that power into and through sushumna nadi.

We are honored to bring senior teacher Leslie Howard and her pelvic floor workshop to Namaste. The female pelvic floor is an under-appreciated region of our anatomy-until something goes wrong! Common problems related to this area include lumbar pain and weakness, sacroiliac, hip and sciatic pain, loss of bladder control, digestive, menstrual and sexual difficulties. The pelvic floor can be too gripped, too weak, or even both at the same time.
You will learn how to distinguish the three layers of the pelvic floor and how to both soften and strengthen these areas. The workshop will begin with descriptions, drawings and handouts to help you retain what you learn. There will be a series of specific exercises and asanas, and a Q&A opportunity.

with Ashley Sharp
Ashley Sharp is a longtime Namaste favorite, who now resides in Marin. Join Ashley as she returns to Namaste for this very special workshop. Loving kindness, or Metta, is a mind/heart state that we all experience from time to time. Both the Buddha and the Yoga Sutras ask us to cultivate this state, teaching that we can grow Ashley Sharp has been teaching yoga since 2000. She brings a lifetime of knowledge of the body from both dance and yoga into her classes. Emphasizing the breath and incorporating yogic philosophy transforms the simple physical work of asana into a spiritual practice. She sees life and therefore yoga class as a grand adventure, but be warned that she is a joke school dropout. She completed two teacher trainings, one with Erich Schiffmann and another with Sat Santokh Sing.

with Sean Michael Hall
Most activities of daily living involve a rounding forward of the shoulders, hardness in the heart and belly, and flexion of the hips. This habitual way of interacting with the world creates contracture and closure - and ultimately disconnects us from ourselves and others. Sean Michael Hall will lead a backbending practice that reprograms the physical and energy bodies to open fully and safely. This two-hour workshop will teach practices that free the breath, shoulders, hip flexors, and spine before moving deeply into a number of different backbends. Sean Michael Hall began his practice of yoga in 1996. Sean's classes blend the full spectrum of approaches he has practiced and studied. They tend to be physically challenging and vinyasa-based, but with a strong emphasis on correct alignment and cultivating the mindfulness needed to find and experience the deeper states of awareness that proper alignment allows. Sean is also a licensed acupuncturist specializing in musculo-skeletal complaints and women's health, and is owner of East Bay Acupuncture & Natural Medicine.
